No Sew Barbie Mermaid Tail

Spread the love

Turn an old kid’s sock into a Barbie mermaid tail without ever picking up a needle and thread.

My daughter just received her first Barbie for her birthday, as well as an Elsa and Anna doll. She loves playing with them, but hates that they only have one outfit. I told her that when I was a little girl, I used to make my own Barbie clothes out of socks, so of course she wanted to do this. While sliding one of her dolls into a tube sock to show her, she told me that it looked like a Barbie mermaid tail. Light bulb! We found our first project.

What you will need:

A kid’s tube sock

Sequins

Glue gun

Cardboard

Fabric marker

Directions:

My daughter is 5 years old. Her tube sock fit snuggly around the Barbie’s legs and hips. If do not have one snug enough, you might have to cut and then glue or sew the sock back together to reach the desired size.

Cut the foot of the sock off.

Draw the tail fin onto the other sock in the pair. Make sure that the top of the fin is the same width as the cut end of the first sock. Cut through both layers of the sock. This should give you two fin shaped pieces.

Cut a cardboard fin about half the size of your fabric fin.

Glue the two pieces of fabric fin together around the cardboard piece.

Glue the upper portion of the fin inside of the cut end of the first tube sock.

Squeeze a bead of hot glue across the seam that joins the tail and the fin and press on the sequins.

Hot glue dries quickly, so work in small sections to cover your fin in sequins.

Form the scales by gluing sequins in U-shapes horizontally across your tale.

Add as many scales as you like to complete your perfect mermaid tail.

    1. Great! I used to do this to all my socks when I was a little girl to make more clothes for my Barbie. I loved doing it.
