Painted Captain Underpants Pumpkin

Our little girl loves books. She has gone through many different favorites in her five years on this earth. They usually change from week to week. Ever since we have gotten into chapter books though, there has only been one favorite and that is Captain Underpants. She cannot get enough of him and his sidekicks, George and Harold. We have read them all. She draws the characters all the time and the characters have even inspired her to want to become a comic book writer. We went to a local farm this weekend and stocked up on pumpkins. Since my girl loves that whacky superhero so much, I thought that I would make her a Captain Underpants pumpkin to greet her as she leaves the house and comes home from school every day. His simple features made this an easy and fun painted pumpkin.

Glossy Sugar Painting Sunflower

We love experimenting with different painting techniques. Recently, we played around with salt painting. The process was so cool and generated a lot of ooohs and ahhhs from my daughter. She loved the way the paint spread out quickly as it touched the salt. Today, we switched the salt for sugar. The technique and results were equally cool. The color also spread out in interesting patterns when it touched the sugar and it left a gorgeous glossy finish. We used this method to create a pretty sunflower painting for fall. Fall Tree Flip Book

My daughter’s favorite series of chapter books is the Captain Underpants series. In this series of books, there is a mini section called the Flip-o-rama. It is a mini flip book within the existing story. My daughter loves this and has made several flip books of her own over the last few months. We have played around with them quite a bit and they have become a little bit of an obsession in our house. They are just so much fun to make. With fall on the way, we had a little fun with some fall themed flip books and we just had to share them with you. We have included printable tree templates to help get you going. These would be great to use for all seasons.Fall flip book with printable template. Design them for the seasons and make a flip book for every season. Arts and crafts for kids

Stuffed Paper Bag Fall Crafts

While cleaning out our kitchen the other day, I stumbled across a full package of brown paper lunch bags. We do not use them for lunches anymore… but oh! the crafting possibilities. When you have about 50 paper bags and a lazy weekend, what else is there to do but make a bunch of fall crafts.

Crumpled Newspaper Fall Tree

We are kind of excited about this simple crumpled newspaper fall tree craft.

Corrugated cardboard is a favorite material of ours. The texture of the ridges in the cardboard adds a great feel to any project. I love the earthy look that the cardboard brings to the tree trunk. The crumpled newspaper was fun to work with and form and it added another element of texture to this pretty mixed media project.

Dixie Cup Squirrel Craft

These Dixie cup squirrels are an easy and adorable fall craft.

My daughter ever so randomly and matter-of-factly said to me the other day, “Mama, let’s make a squirrel craft.” It was so out of the blue. I had to ask why. Her simple answer was “Because they are so cute”. That was good enough for me and let’s be honest, they are pretty cute. These Dixie cup squirrels are perfect for the fall and were easy to make.

Watercolor and Salt Paintings

I love the reaction that occurs when you combine salt and watercolors. Salt paintings are a fun process that your kids will love.

Try sprinkling salt on a freshly painted watercolor picture and see what happens. It is lovely. Another cool process is painting on the salt with watercolors. This is a messy process, but a fun one that will certainly delight your kids. A word of warning, this technique is more about the process and the fun than the final product. There are changes that occur to the paintings upon drying. We have included some notes and suggestions about the salt paintings at the bottom of the post.
