I used to love in old cartoons when the characters would fall in love and their eyes would bulge out of their heads filled with hearts. This would always crack me up. With Valentine’s Day coming up, I thought that these love goggles would be a quick and fun project.
My daughter and I gathered a bunch of acorns in the beginning of the fall for acorn crafts. While organizing our craft supplies, I stumbled across our last few.

With the kickoff to the holiday season just around the corner, I am feeling pretty spirited. I have to admit, I even started playing Christmas carols this week.
Nothing quite says fall like all things pumpkin. Everywhere you look, the world is decorated or flavored with pumpkin & I for one love it.
In our last post, I told you about my daughter’s new-found love for the Pyramids. She recently saw a documentary on them & now wants to know everything about them. We went to the library & bought some books & over the weekend we made a pyramid craft. I thought it might be fun for us to stack a pyramid, so yesterday we painted some egg carton pieces & used them to build colorful pyramids.
My little girl is indeed a princess at heart. She wears a tutu every day, even over her pajamas. It is adorable.

Last week, we were playing around with egg carton pieces & we came up with the perfect craft for our little princess.
We used 5 egg carton pieces for each dress. We started by snipping 3 egg carton pieces for the dress tiers.
We painted all of the egg carton pieces in the colors of our choice. My daughter wanted a silver & purple princess dress.
We glued each of the snipped pieces one on top of each other. We glued another uncut piece over the top of the tiers. Next, we glued the last piece of egg carton to the top upside down. My daughter has a low temperature glue gun that she loves. She used her glue gun & I used my own.
*Please note that the tip on a low temperature glue gun still gets hot & burns may occur, so use caution & your best judgment as to whether your child is able to operate.*
My daughter glued a large gem stone to the front of the dress for a pretty little accent. She then added pom poms to the top of her dress to form puffy sleeves. I made a strapless dress & one with spaghetti straps.
When my little one finished with her dress, she gave it a clay head to finish it off. We loved how our dresses came out & they were so fun to make.

My daughter has the most magnificent imagination. It is fascinating to watch her play. She loves to build villages & towns with her blocks & she picks up random odds and ends around the house often to incorporate into her pretend worlds.
We painted some egg carton pieces & toilet paper roll earlier this week to keep for future crafts. We started playing with the painted pieces & we thought of a great craft that she could use later for her pretend play.
We made these simple egg carton cars. All you need is buttons for the wheels & some foam pieces or construction paper for the windows and headlights. Use a Sharpie to draw in the doors.
These were quick and easy to make and made a fine addition to my daughter’s block city. “Look mama, I parked all the cars in the parking lot.”

We use recycled items in our crafts all the time. It is very difficult for me to throw anything out. This has crossed over to my 4 year old & my husband as well. My daughter will save bottle caps & other random things & tell me “This will be good for a craft” & my husband won’t throw anything away without asking me if I can use it first.

Our craft room has bins of recyclables, but most prevalent in our collection is egg cartons. We have piles of them. It was time to put some of them to some good use. Here is a great craft that parents can do for their little kings & queens.
Egg Carton Crown
What you will need:
Egg cartons
Glue gun (Use caution when operating a glue gun. Low heat guns are recommended for children.)
Acrylic Paints
Directions:
Egg Cartons do come in a variety of different shapes. We used a family sized pack that looked like this inside.
Cut through the egg carton the long way. You will want to cut through the centers of the 2 spiky portions running along the middle of the carton.
Your cut piece should look like this.
Cut through the middle of your cut section the long way until you have two halves.
Use a glue gun to glue the two pieces together to form one long piece. You should be able to get the spikes to match up so that they blend when gluing them together. Depending on the size of your child’s head you may need to glue on a few extra spiked sections.
When you reach the desired length, bend the long piece of egg carton to form a crown shape & then glue into place.
Paint your crown in the color of your choice. My daughter wanted red for hers.
Use buttons & pom poms for embellishments or add on whatever you like to create your crown.
My daughter loved her crown. It fit her head perfectly. She had a crown fit for a queen.

Last weekend, I threw my sister a baby shower. I had been planning it for months. I made diaper cakes for every table with small woodland stuffed animals on top of each. Each diaper cake was built around a paper towel roll. I made nine cakes in all.
Kids love boxes. The larger the box, the more fun to be had. We are still in the process of getting our house unpacked after our move and have a ton of empty cardboard boxes. We have been having a lot of fun making things out of our boxes & the cardboard.

My daughter has a great building blocks marble run set. She used to play with it all of the time. The whole family loved playing with it. Unfortunately, since our move, we have been unable to find it.
I have seen a number of homemade marble runs made out of cardboard tubes, straws & even Legos & I thought we could try our hands at our own while we searched for our missing one.
We used a large cardboard box. We cut the flaps off of one side to leave one side wide open. We used the flaps to form our ramps. I wanted to add different options & obstacles to the ramp so I cut a hole or multiple holes into each piece of cardboard.
I used a glue gun to glue the cardboard pieces in place at an angle, making sure to leave space on the bottom end of each piece for the marble to be able to drop. I used plenty of glue around the edges to hold the ramp pieces in place and used cardboard tubes in a couple of areas for additional drop options.
We tested it out a couple of times & found that our marbles fell forward a few times, so we glued a couple of extra scraps of cardboard under the bottom front to balance it out. We used the marbles, but then found that a handful of poms poms was just as fun.
My little girl was so excited about her cool new toy. “This is soooo awesome, mama.”

We moved into a new house recently. We have been working on unpacking and setting up our home over the last couple of weeks. It is hard to believe that we have so much stuff. The boxes seem endless. Mai has been enjoying playing inside of the empty boxes and we have been having fun repurposing our boxes into new fun creations.
My daughter loves to play store. She pretends that she is running her own Stop & Shop all the time. She often uses her calculator as a cash register, but I thought we could make her another one using one of our old boxes.
We used a medium-sized box.
Open both ends of the box.
Cut the seams on one of the boxes sides. This will be the front of your register.
Cut an arc shape on one side of the box & then use the leftover cardboard as a template to cut the other side. This should remove the left & right top flaps of the box as well.
Cut a slot out of the front of the register to add a drawer. Glue the bottom of the box back together. Bring the front part of the box up and curve it to the arc. Glue it into place.
Trim the sides & fold the top front flap in half & then fold it down so that it is flat across the top. Fold the back flap in half & fold over so that the first fold is flat & that the second fold aligns with the top of the register.

Use the leftover piece cut from the arc to form a drawer by creasing the edges about an inch in on all four sides. Fold up the creases and glue the seams into place.
Use the other leftover piece of cardboard to cut a rectangular piece that will fit on the register as its face. Paint your register & rectangular piece in the colors of your choice & let dry.
Cut the keys & a register screen out of construction paper & write in the numbers with magic marker. Glue all the pieces into place.
This took very little time to make & put a big smile on my daughter’s face. Mai’s bakery is now open for business.
