Sun Catching Water Color Painting

Spread the love

If you are a regular reader, you probably know that my daughter loves to paint. We like to try different painting mediums and experiments. We all the know the reaction that occurs when you mix water & oil.  I was wondering what would happen if you used oil on paper and then added water color to it. Would the oil repel it on paper as well?

What you will need:

Water color painting paper

Cooking oil

Water colors (I just mixed water & food coloring)

Paint brush

Q-tips

In a small dipping bowl pour just a cap full of cooking oil.

Using a paint brush or Qtip dipped in oil draw out the design of your painting.

When your image is complete, you can begin painting.

015

Prepare your water colors.

Let your little artist do her work.

Well, It did not quite repel the watercolor, but it did give off this wonderful transparent effect when in the sunlight. Mai liked the butterfly so much, she asked mommy to make her one with an elephant too.

  1. My daughter is going to love this. She loves painting, too. And it’ll be good for her fine motor skills. Her curriculum is online, Time4Learning, which she loves, but I’m always looking for hands-on experiments or crafts to do together. Thanks for this post!

  2. What was it like as it dried? Did the oil keep it kind of greasy? Would it spread if someone bumped against it or was it absorbed into the paper enough to not be a problem?

  3. What a wonderful craft activity! Totally pinning this one. This looks like a lot of fun, especially for spring! Love it!

Thanks so much for sharing with us on the #homeschoollinkup!
