Egg Carton Building Blocks

In our last post, I told you about my daughter’s new-found love for the Pyramids. She recently saw a documentary on them & now wants to know everything about them. We went to the library & bought some books & over the weekend we made a pyramid craft. I thought it might be fun for us to stack a pyramid, so yesterday we painted some egg carton pieces & used them to build colorful pyramids.

We built our pyramids by stacking our egg carton pieces on top of one another & then we tried again using craft sticks in our build.

The craft sticks inspired my daughter & set off a chain of engineering possibilities. She began building & wanted more & more egg carton pieces. I found a bunch of old pre-painted ones in our craft room & also cut up more cartons to make her more “building blocks”.

She explained to me that this was her cheetah cage.

We tried some other craft stick & egg carton structures.

And then worked with more simple stacking activities as well.

My daughter enjoyed making the towers, mostly because she loved knocking them back down again.

We stored our new egg carton blocks away until the next time.

    1. Hello, I am glad that you liked them. We used acrylic paints to paint the egg carton pieces. We use different brands, but I believe it was Liquitex Basics on these.

  1. I see! Thanks for the prompt response. Can I do this activity using egg cartons (plastic). I tried cutting into pieces but, it was awkward.

    1. I have never worked with plastic egg cartons, so I am not sure. The edges could be sharp for your child. Cutting the egg cartons is a little awkward. I usually cut away the peaks first and then cut around.
