When I was young girl, I can remember my grandmother’s Christmas village. She always set it up at about this time each year. Her miniature houses sat on a blanket of cotton and were surrounded by little pine trees and Christmas carolers. I used to sit and look at them whenever I would visit during the holidays. Looking at them just felt like Christmas.
We already had our first snowfall where we live and the snow made me think of the snowy village. I wanted to make a winter village with my daughter and she was excited to make one too. I asked her if she wanted to paint, but she wanted to make our villages out of construction paper.
We used blue construction paper for our backdrop and used white construction paper to make our snow-covered grounds.
We cut simple shapes to form our villages. The houses were squares or rectangles with triangle roofs. The trees were just triangles and rectangles. My daughter also wanted an igloo in her village, which was just a semi-circle. She made her main house in the fore-front and then placed the igloo in the background and made one tiny house that she set far back and explained that it was very far away. She added details to her picture with markers as she went. She added a couple of trees to her scene as well and was excited to decorate the trees and her houses in glitter.
Once she placed all of her pieces and shook off the excess glitter, she was ready to add the snow. We just used a cotton swab and white paint for the snow.
She did a fantastic job. Her village was magical. The mixed media was a wonderful project for us. As always, we had a fun time working together and chatting as we worked. Now I have another beautiful memory to associate with Christmas villages.
Thank you as always for stopping by. Please follow us on Facebook as well
This is such a clever idea! I love it and feel inspired to get onto our own winter shape village immediately! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, Julie. 🙂 We are having so much fun making winter art right now. 🙂
