Salt Dough and Nature Winter Wonderlands and Wreaths

Spread the love

I just joked the other day about how when you are a crafter it seems as if friends and family are always giving you random materials to craft with. A lovely woman that works with my husband recently gave us a huge bin full of assorted potpourri. My daughter has been dying to get her hands into it.

One of our favorite activities has always been to work with salt dough or clay and nature items. I wanted to make nature wreaths using homemade salt dough, so I gathered some nature supplies outdoors. I picked branches from different varieties of evergreen trees in our yard. We also dug our hands into all of that potpourri and found cinnamon sticks, pine cones, star anise and other lovely and fragrant fillers. We added a handful of red beads for a little bit of a festive touch.

We started by rolling out a ball of green dough and forming a ring. You can make your rings as large as you would like your wreaths.

From there, it was all up to us. My daughter used her scissors to snip branches to the sizes that she needed.

We pressed our branches, potpourri and beads around our wreaths until we were happy with our end result.

They came out so lovely and smelled amazing.

My daughter wasn’t done there though, she wanted to make a “Christmas island”, as she referred to it. She built beautiful winter wonderlands. We used a can of white Play-doh for our wonderlands too.

She threaded the beads onto some of the branches. I thought this was a nice touch.

We used flour to top off our islands. The flour was messy, but it looked wonderful on our scenes.

My daughter made two Christmas islands and I made one. I knew there was a reason why this was one of favorite activities. Our projects came out great and we had so much fun making them together.

  1. Love your site, except for all the ads. Really makes it hard to see the articles. Did you make the dough or did you buy it? I am looking for something different to do with my lady residents and I like this idea. Thank you!

    1. Hi Natalie, we make nature crafts and clay/salt dough often and have used both homemade salt dough (cooked and uncooked) or store bought Play-doh. It is usually whatever we have on hand at the moment. For this particular craft we made homemade play dough using a cooked method, but green store bought dough should work well here as well. Here is an instructables link for recipe. http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-Playdough-Play-doh/
