My daughter loves using scissors. She got her first pair of safety scissors when she was two. She loves cutting activities and crafts. Among some of her favorites were a simple paper plate hair cutting activity and a trim the Christmas tree one.

Working on scissor skills is great for your child’s fine motor skills and their hand eye coordination. Scissors are also a useful tool and if your child is anything like mine is, it is also a fun activity.
Safety scissors are a great idea for beginners and adult supervision is always recommended while using scissors.
For this Christmas themed cutting activity, you will need:
Paper plate
Googly eyes
Construction paper (red and white)
Tempura or acrylic paint
Cotton balls
and of course scissors
Directions:
We quickly painted the back of the paper plate in a flesh tone and let it dry. We used a glue stick to add googly eyes and then painted in a nose, lips and rosy cheeks.
We used red construction paper and cotton balls to form Santa’s hat.
We cut three layers of white construction paper in three different sizes to form the beard. We glued each layer to the bottom of the face with the longest layer on the bottom and the smallest on the top and then we cut strands 2/3’s of the way up. We used a pencil to curl the beard for an added effect. My daughter enjoyed this step.
Once the Santa is done, he is ready for a trim. My daughter was more than eager to start working on Santa.
She cut and cut and cut.
She just about shaved Santa’s beard right off.
When she was done, she wanted to do it all over again.
We gave Santa a quick beard transplant and she gave Santa another trim.

My 3rd grade son came home with a similar Santa craft, but under each little white curl of beard, there was a multiplication problem that he had solved. 🙂 I love Christmas crafts with a little hidden academic or skill oriented touch.
That is a wonderful idea. My daughter is a bit young for multiplication, but you could do that with so many possibilities, addition, letters, sight words. Thanks for the suggestion.
