Mixed Media Cardboard Hearts

The holidays may be over, but all of our cardboard boxes left from Christmas deliveries remain. This is great news for us because we love to work with cardboard. With Valentine’s Day just a couple of weeks away, my daughter has been all hearts and flowers, so naturally we put some of our cardboard to good use to make these pretty mixed media heart Valentines together.

I love the look of corrugated cardboard, so we used corrugated cardboard as the base to each of our hearts. To get this look, you can peel back the top layer of cardboard to reveal the corrugation. You can peel the cardboard back partially or peel the top layer off completely.

Use a toothpick to help peel the edges up. Slide the toothpick along the inside of the ridges to help clean them out.

A toothpick also works great to punch out a design and peel away for a cool corrugated design. Once you are done peeling your hearts, you are ready to paint or color in your cardboard hearts.

I used acrylic paints to paint my cardboard. My daughter opted for markers to decorate hers.

When I finished painting, I set my hearts aside to let the paint dry.

We used newspaper, construction paper, tissue paper, buttons and markers to add embellishments to our hearts and then punched holes into them to string them up.

My daughter made a couple too, but will not let me see them until Valentine’s Day. She made a couple of special Valentines for me and for her daddy.

My special Valentine is sealed until February 14th. I can’t wait to see it.

Thank you as always for stopping by. Please visit our Facebook page as well.
