Gingerbread Men Crafts

Footprint gingerbread man craft - cute little Christmas keepsake of your children's feet

“Run, run as fast as you can. You can’t catch me. I’m the Gingerbread Man.”

I know it is early & we have not even had Halloween yet, but always around this time of year my mind starts wandering to gingerbread. Why, you might ask? Because every year, I start getting ready to construct my annual holiday gingerbread house. Since it is usually a time consuming project, I typically start in the beginning of November.

Here is a gingerbread version of our old house from a few Christmases ago.

This year has been hectic with moving out of our house & waiting for the construction on our new home to finish. With all of this going on, a gingerbread house is not in the cards, but that can’t stop us from making some gingerbread crafts.

We are staying with relatives during our construction. We just so happen to be sharing a roof with a little girl, a little younger than Mai, who also enjoys crafts as much as we do. Last night the three of us worked on a couple simple crafts together.

Build a gingerbread man

This was a quick & easy craft for both children. The skill level will be different depending on age. I did this craft with a 2 & 3 year old.

What you will need:

Construction paper (brown & white)

Googly eyes

Buttons

Pom poms

Glue sticks or school glue

Magic marker

Draw & cut out a few gingerbread man shapes.

IMG_0371

Cut wavy lines out of white construction paper for the icing for the arms & legs. Put those, googly eyes, buttons & pom poms on a plate to be used for decoration.

IMG_0372

Give your child or children some glue & let them go…

Here was Mai’s original craft. She then decided that she wanted to draw in a tutu, ballet shoes and some hair as well.

Our other tiny crafter did a great job on hers as well.

And of course, mommy did one as well. I stole the rosy cheek idea from my daughter.

They both did great on their crafts, but before we picked up we squeezed in one more.

I painted both children’s cute little tootsies in brown paint & pressed them onto a piece of paper one at a time.

IMG_0396

I dipped a finger into the same paint & formed the arms on either side of each foot. With white paint, I added the icing to the arms & across the bottom of the feet.

IMG_0398

We finished them off by drawing in the face, bow & buttons using magic marker. This will make a lovely holiday keepsake & a great memory for the kids of this time that they are sharing together.

Haunted House Crafts

Haunted House Shape Craft - Halloween Crafts for kids

I love doing crafts with my daughter. It is always fun to see what she can do. One of my favorite crafts to do with her is shape crafts. I love to watch what she will construct and listen to her tell the stories about what she just made. Last night we took some of those shapes & used them to form haunted houses. Here’s how…

Cut out a bunch of shapes as shown. You will need two shapes for your house base & tower, two triangles for your roofs & two rectangles for chimneys. Cut small squares & rectangles out of yellow paper for the windows.

IMG_8635

Glue your house base in place.

IMG_8636

IMG_8638

Glue on your roof. Draw a cross in the middle of your yellow squares to form the windows & then glue them in place as well.

IMG_8647

Glue your tower next to your house & add the chimneys.

IMG_8649

IMG_8650

Cut out a circle to form a moon & glue it in place. Add googly eyes to finish off your haunted houses.

Footprint Animals From A-Z Featuring L, M & N

Footprint Crafts from L - N

We are now more than halfway done with our footprint animal crafts from A – Z. It has been a fun project for Mai & I. She gets a kick out of seeing me turn her little feet into artwork & has learned about a few new animals. Last night our crafts covered the letters L, M & N.  Our first one was L & while we tossed around a few different animals that began with L, we went with a lion. Here’s how.

Footprint Lion Craft

Paint your child’s foot mostly in yellow. Paint a lighter shade of yellow or white in a T-shape as shown. Press the foot onto a piece of paper.

IMG_6941 IMG_6943

B is For Baboon Footprint Craft

Footprint Baboon Craft - B is for Baboon

We are into week two of our A-Z footprint crafts. Our choice for the letter “b” is baboon. My daughter made a deal with me regarding our footprint craft. She said that if she let me make a baboon out of her feet, then she would get to paint my feet too. I agreed, of course.

To make our footprint baboon, paint around the outline of your child’s foot with a dark brown. Paint inside of the outline in a lighter shade of brown. Paint the heel in yellow & then paint an upside down “T” with light blue around it as shown.

IMG_5690

Press it onto a piece of paper.

IMG_5698

Draw in the nose & mouth on the heel.

IMG_5701

Dry brush around the outside of the foot using a fanned out brush to make the fur.

IMG_5699

IMG_5710

Paint in the body in dark brown to finish off your craft.

True to my word, I let Mai paint my feet. She painted it & pressed it onto the paper & set it aside to let it dry. I can’t wait to see what she makes with it.

Footprint Armadillo Craft

Footprint Armadillo CraftI realized something the other day. My little girl is growing too fast. I was sorting through a box of our old crafts & found an old imprint of her foot from when she was only a few weeks old. I went through all of our old footprint crafts & I realized just how much those little feet have been growing. I decided that I wanted to get in as many footprint craft keepsakes as possible. Me, Mai & her little tootsies are going to make footprint crafts from A-Z with maybe a few special requests in between. Mai does ask for specific foot crafts often after all. Last night was our “A”. A is for armadillo.

Footprint Volcano Craft

Footprint Volcano Craft

We took our daughter to see the movie ‘Inside Out’ when it first came out. We loved the movie. It was filled with so much emotion. Tears streamed down my face for a good portion of the movie. The funny thing is my tears began before the movie even started. There was a lovely musical short in the beginning of the movie about a lonely volcano. I became slightly obsessed with the song in the short & have been playing it over & over again.

Mai has even started telling me “I lava you.”

Last night we were singing the song & she insisted that we had to make a volcano craft out of her feet. As I have told you before she really loves the foot crafts. Here is how we made our footprint volcano.

Paint your child’s foot mostly brown with red & yellow at the heel. Press it into a piece of paper & let it dry.

IMG_5465

IMG_5464

Use red magic markers to draw in the dripping & spattering lava.

IMG_5466

Use markers or crayons to form the smoke.

IMG_5468

Draw an island around your volcano.

Thomas The Train Crafts

Paper Plate Thomas The Train Craft

My daughter loves cartoons. She would stay parked in front of the television all day, but I limit her screen time. There are only a few shows that she watches. Her favorite shows are ‘Stella & Sam’ & ‘Julius Jr.’ Since I monitor her television time, it always surprises me when she knows so many characters from other cartoons. Last night she kept talking to me about Percy. I did not know who Percy was. It turned out that Percy was a friend of Thomas the train. “Percy is so cute.” she told me. I was not familiar with Percy, but I know Thomas. I asked my daughter if she wanted to make Thomas & Percy crafts & of course she jumped at it. She chose to make Percy, so I made Thomas. We chose to make paper plate crafts. Here’s how.

What you will need:

Paper plates

Silver paint

Construction paper in blue, black, red & green.

Magic markers

Glue

Directions:

Paint a paper plate in silver & let it dry.

IMG_5066

Cut out the shapes for the bodies, eyes, mouths, lights & smoke stacks. (Here were all the pieces used to form Thomas)

IMG_5089

Draw in the eyeballs & any details with magic marker.

IMG_5069

I cut out all the pieces for Mai’s Percy as well.

Glue all the pieces together to form your characters.

IMG_5073 IMG_5077

Draw in nose, mouth & cheeks.

IMG_5078

As you can see Mai was very proud of her creation.

IMG_5079 Percy The Train Craft

Mommy was proud of hers too.

20 Character Inspired Kid’s Crafts

20 Character Inspired Kid's Crafts Inspired by Disney, Pixar, Dr. Suess & more...

A few weeks ago we took our daughter to the movies to see ‘Inside Out’. I cried, my daughter laughed & we all left the movie happy. After the movie, my daughter insisted that we all call her Joy after the main character.  She wanted to wear green every day & asked people what they thought of her blue hair. This is a common occurrence in our house. Her character changes from week to week. She has been Hello Kitty, Elsa & other assorted characters and animals. Not only does she enjoy pretending to be them, she loves making crafts that are inspired by them. We have made many crafts over the years & have stumbled across quite a few amazing ones as well. Here are some of our favorites.

Footprint Grasshopper Craft

Footprint Grasshopper Craft

What is it about little feet that make them so adorable? I have always loved baby feet. I feel likewise about toddler feet too. That is why footprint crafts are my favorite. I just can’t get enough of them & my daughter loves to make them too. We have quite the collection of footprint art hanging up around our home. Last night we were talking about grasshoppers & crickets, which of course ended with us having to make a grasshopper craft.

Paint your  child’s foot in green & press onto a piece of paper. Let it dry. Use paint or magic marker to draw in an eye & antennae onto the heel.

IMG_4466

Draw or paint in the legs & details for the body.

IMG_4467

We used chalk to highlight the segments.

IMG_4468

Draw or paint in a branch or leaves for a final touch.

This will make a great addition to our growing collection of footprint crafts.
