Day of the Dead Painted Acorns

Spread the love

Our yard is filled with acorns. This is the case every year at this time. We only just need to walk a couple of steps in any direction to stumble across a pile of them. We have gathered up a bunch and are excited about all of the possibilities. My daughter already has some great Christmas ideas for them. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. These Day of the Dead painted acorns are just perfect for Halloween.

All you need are acorns, acrylic paints & skinny paintbrushes.

Directions:

Rinse your acorns with soapy water and put them on paper towels to dry.

Paint your acorns one side at a time. If our acorns didn’t have caps, we painted them completely white. If the acorns did have caps, I painted the caps black to represent hair and then painted the rest in white. You may need a few coats. Be sure to let the paint dry between coats.

Paint on black circles for eyes, upside down hearts for noses and horizontal & vertical lines for the mouth.

Once you have the base of your skulls, the fun part is decorating them. Day of the Dead skulls are bright and colorful and usually have a lot of floral designs. Paint inside the eyes and all around. Paint on the cheeks or give your skull a crown of flowers. Have fun and show us some of your pretty painted acorns.
