If you are a regular reader, you probably know that my daughter loves to paint. We like to try different painting mediums and experiments. We all the know the reaction that occurs when you mix water & oil. I was wondering what would happen if you used oil on paper and then added water color to it. Would the oil repel it on paper as well?
What you will need:
Water color painting paper
Cooking oil
Water colors (I just mixed water & food coloring)
Paint brush
Q-tips
In a small dipping bowl pour just a cap full of cooking oil.
Using a paint brush or Qtip dipped in oil draw out the design of your painting.
When your image is complete, you can begin painting.
Prepare your water colors.
Let your little artist do her work.
Well, It did not quite repel the watercolor, but it did give off this wonderful transparent effect when in the sunlight. Mai liked the butterfly so much, she asked mommy to make her one with an elephant too.

Again another I will totally pass onto my husband to do with our girls 🙂
Thanks Janine. She asked me to make an elephant when she was done painting this one
What a great idea. I have to do this with my girls. It would look beautiful on their windows.
Thank you. My daughter loves to paint and she was excited about the butterfly at the end.
Love this, will be so pretty when it’s sunny!
It does give off a lovely effect in the sun. It is still hanging in our front window .
That is so cool! I love the effects of the oil.
Wow that is beautiful! I would love to do some of this!
So fun and so easy, I didn’t know about that cool oil trick! Going to try this next week with my youngest, they’re off school for a week!
I think this turned out so cute and the fact she wanted to do more lets you know she loved being creative and how fun for you to display her art work.
Wonderful share!
your butterfly is so pretty!
Ummmm amazing! This is such a fantastic idea and will be using it immediately!
What a super cool idea, turned out great!
My daughter is going to love this. She loves painting, too. And it’ll be good for her fine motor skills. Her curriculum is online, Time4Learning, which she loves, but I’m always looking for hands-on experiments or crafts to do together. Thanks for this post!
What was it like as it dried? Did the oil keep it kind of greasy? Would it spread if someone bumped against it or was it absorbed into the paper enough to not be a problem?
I used vegetable oil. I would lay down paper underneath as the oil might come through. I used watercolor paper which is meant for wet paints. The oil did dry to the touch and did not pose a greasy problem.
Great Idea! This is really nice I would try this with my son.
What a wonderful craft activity! Totally pinning this one. This looks like a lot of fun, especially for spring! Love it!
Thanks so much for sharing with us on the #homeschoollinkup!
