My daughter’s favorite movie is Madagascar. She is in love with the little penguins, especially Private. We had movie night this weekend and while in the middle of the movie, she jumped up and said, “Mama, what if we make penguins.”

We couldn’t decide whether we wanted to paint or make our penguin with shapes, so we did both and opted for a mixed media project.
We both painted backdrops with watercolors onto a piece of watercolor paper and let them dry. The paint dried quickly. I cut a piece of newspaper to form a snowy hill. I used watered down white acrylic paint to paint streaks over the newspaper.
We both cut shapes out of black construction paper to form the body and the head and then cut shapes out of white to form the white part of the penguin. I cut a piece of newspaper for the inside of the face and painted over it in white. We glued our shapes into place over the watercolor backdrop and then cut triangles out of orange construction paper to form the beaks.
I glued buttons on for the penguins eyes and cut out small feet. My daughter wanted googly eyes for her cute little guys. We used pieces of cut newspaper and white paint to form falling snow.
