My daughter loves yarn. She will sometimes unravel it & drag it through our house and wrap it around chairs, tables and other furniture. She wraps it around sticks, markers & anything else that she can get her hands on, so it is probably no surprise that yarn wrapped crafts are a favorite activity of ours.

Build A Necklace Activity

Jewelry craft activity - Make a necklace & earrings out of craft gems . Kid's arts & crafts

It thrills me that my daughter did not fall very far from the ol’ tree. She is so much like me in her love for arts & crafts and it is wonderful that it is something that we are able to do together. I love her creativity. It is wonderful to watch her work. The other day she was crafting on her own & grabbed some glitter and gemstones. When she was done, she handed me her finished project and told her that she had made it for me. It was so pretty & sparkly.

She explained that it was two dolphins in love under a sunset. Awwww. It was so sweet. I put it on my nightstand, but when I picked it up to look at it again in the morning, I held it in the other direction and it looked like something different to me.

It gave me an idea for a quick activity that I thought she might like. I quickly cut out a paper bust and glued it to another piece of paper. I drew a ring around the neck with a magic marker & then some lines coming from the ears.

I gave my daughter the bag of gems and she placed the gems in place to form a necklace & earrings. You can choose to add hair and a face too, but for us, we just kept building jewelry.

Egg Carton Building Blocks

Egg Carton building blocks for kids - Engineering & STEM activities - kid's arts, crafts, learning & activities with recyclables

In our last post, I told you about my daughter’s new-found love for the Pyramids. She recently saw a documentary on them & now wants to know everything about them. We went to the library & bought some books & over the weekend we made a pyramid craft. I thought it might be fun for us to stack a pyramid, so yesterday we painted some egg carton pieces & used them to build colorful pyramids.

Egyptian Pyramid Craft

Egyptian pyramid craft for kids - preschooler arts & craft activities - EgyptA funny thing happened the other night. My husband was watching a documentary on TV about the pyramids. Our 4 year old daughter climbed up on the couch and sat with him to see what he was watching and almost immediately became fascinated by it. She was mesmerized. She asked question after question and was repeating some of the information that she just learned in amazement. When we went to the library yesterday, she asked that we find her a book on the pyramids, which we did. Her fascination continued. “Mama, I want to go to Egypt.” Me too!  I don’t think a trip to Egypt is in our immediate future, but we can continue to explore more on the great pyramids and have a little bit of inspired craft fun while we learn.

We made our own simple pyramids with some construction paper & paint. We cut a large triangle out of yellow construction paper.

IMG_1675

We cut the triangle into strips.

IMG_1676

We brushed paint over each of the strips with a bronze colored paint.

IMG_1705

We set the strips aside to dry.

IMG_1704

Using a glue stick we glued all of the pieces to a piece of 12″x 12″ blue scrapbook paper, just like we were putting back together a puzzle.

IMG_1709

My daughter wanted her strips spaced out, while I pieced mine together tightly.

After all of the pieces are in place. We used cotton balls to form clouds.

Our pyramids were fun to make. Hopefully, we will get a chance to see them up close & in person some day, but until then we are having fun learning about them.

Alphabet Soup

Alphabet Soup Craft & Letter Writing Activity For Kids - a fun way to practice writing their ABC's.,

My daughter is very passionate about books. She loves to read stories & she loves to make up stories of her own. She used to ask me to write her stories as she told them, but recently, she has been wanting to write down her own words. She composes her stories and asks me to spell them for her, but sometimes gets frustrated with her letters. We have been working on practicing our ABC’s and we came up with this quick & fun craft and activity.

We sketched out a simple bowl shape & then cut it out. We did the same with a spoon & then glued the spoon to the bowl.

IMG_1639

My daughter gathered up a few different shades of markers & started writing out her alphabet.

IMG_1643 IMG_1652

She added a few meatballs to go with her letters.

IMG_1648

She spread her letters out all over her soup bowl, squeezing them in wherever she could. Me made a couple bowls of soup. She had fun with it & it was a great way for her to sharpen her writing skills.

Clay Suncatcher Ornaments

Clay Suncatchers - summer arts and crafts projects for kids made with clay & tissue paper.

It seems as if these days the only thing that my daughter wants to play with is clay, so forgive me for the overload of clay projects lately. It is her activity of choice and I have been enjoying working with it as well.  She comes up with some interesting designs & loves to incorporate other craft supplies into the mix.  She made one clay project with pieces of tissue paper the other day & it gave me an idea.

IMG_7801 IMG_7802

All of these suncatchers were made with air dry clay.  For the first one, we rolled out 2 clumps of clay & used a cookie cutter to cut out the same 2 shapes. I used a straw to poke holes all around one of the shapes. When I had enough holes, I placed the hole punched shape onto the other like shape. Using it as a guideline, I used the straw to make holes onto the other shape too. I carefully pulled the 2 shapes apart. We ripped up different colored tissue paper & glued them to the bottom shape. After adding the tissue, I placed the other shape on top of the tissue paper while lining up the 2 shapes. I pinched the outer edges & used a touch of water to smooth out any creases or lumps.

Poke an additional hole if you want to hang it up in the window. String a piece of yarn through the hole. Painting is optional once the clay dries.

Clay Suncatchers - summer arts and crafts projects for kids made with clay & tissue paper

For this next one, we used cookie cutters again. We used a similar method as above, but instead of little holes, we cut out one heart shaped hole in the center and then used wax paper & tissue paper.

For the final project, we made a hand print suncatcher. My daughter traced her hand for me & I cut it out. I used the cut-out as a template and cut out a piece of wax paper. We covered the wax paper in tissue paper & then set it aside to dry. When the tissue paper dried, We rolled out long strips of clay & used it to line the front & back of our handprint.  Air dry clay can be delicate if not thick enough, so do not roll out too thin. Pinch, press and smooth the sides out to join the clay together. Set the clay aside to dry for a day or two.

Again, use water to smooth out any blemishes & set aside to dry. Paint it if you desire. We chose to leave ours bare.

Clay & Rock Nature Crafts

My daughter and I are always trying to come up with new arts & crafts ideas. My 4 year old has quite the creative mind & brings a lot of amazing ideas to the table. We like to think of new projects, but there are still some favorites that we can do over & over again. My daughter’s favorite activity is making nature islands out of clay & items that we collect from our yard. We gather art supplies from our backyard often.
