Yarn is a favorite craft & play material in our house.

My daughter loves yarn. She will sometimes unravel it & drag it through our house and wrap it around chairs, tables and other furniture. She wraps it around sticks, markers & anything else that she can get her hands on, so it is probably no surprise that yarn wrapped crafts are a favorite activity of ours.
I love lazy weekends when there is nothing planned & you can just go with the flow. On weekends like this, my daughter loves to play outside just in our driveway. She loves shadow play & playing with sidewalk chalk.
It thrills me that my daughter did not fall very far from the ol’ tree. She is so much like me in her love for arts & crafts and it is wonderful that it is something that we are able to do together. I love her creativity. It is wonderful to watch her work. The other day she was crafting on her own & grabbed some glitter and gemstones. When she was done, she handed me her finished project and told her that she had made it for me. It was so pretty & sparkly.
She explained that it was two dolphins in love under a sunset. Awwww. It was so sweet. I put it on my nightstand, but when I picked it up to look at it again in the morning, I held it in the other direction and it looked like something different to me.
It gave me an idea for a quick activity that I thought she might like. I quickly cut out a paper bust and glued it to another piece of paper. I drew a ring around the neck with a magic marker & then some lines coming from the ears.
I gave my daughter the bag of gems and she placed the gems in place to form a necklace & earrings. You can choose to add hair and a face too, but for us, we just kept building jewelry.
This was a quick and easy activity to set up and it was perfect for my little girly girl.

In our last post, I told you about my daughter’s new-found love for the Pyramids. She recently saw a documentary on them & now wants to know everything about them. We went to the library & bought some books & over the weekend we made a pyramid craft. I thought it might be fun for us to stack a pyramid, so yesterday we painted some egg carton pieces & used them to build colorful pyramids.
A funny thing happened the other night. My husband was watching a documentary on TV about the pyramids. Our 4 year old daughter climbed up on the couch and sat with him to see what he was watching and almost immediately became fascinated by it. She was mesmerized. She asked question after question and was repeating some of the information that she just learned in amazement. When we went to the library yesterday, she asked that we find her a book on the pyramids, which we did. Her fascination continued. “Mama, I want to go to Egypt.” Me too! I don’t think a trip to Egypt is in our immediate future, but we can continue to explore more on the great pyramids and have a little bit of inspired craft fun while we learn.
We made our own simple pyramids with some construction paper & paint. We cut a large triangle out of yellow construction paper.
We cut the triangle into strips.
We brushed paint over each of the strips with a bronze colored paint.
We set the strips aside to dry.
Using a glue stick we glued all of the pieces to a piece of 12″x 12″ blue scrapbook paper, just like we were putting back together a puzzle.
My daughter wanted her strips spaced out, while I pieced mine together tightly.
After all of the pieces are in place. We used cotton balls to form clouds.
Our pyramids were fun to make. Hopefully, we will get a chance to see them up close & in person some day, but until then we are having fun learning about them.

My daughter is very passionate about books. She loves to read stories & she loves to make up stories of her own. She used to ask me to write her stories as she told them, but recently, she has been wanting to write down her own words. She composes her stories and asks me to spell them for her, but sometimes gets frustrated with her letters. We have been working on practicing our ABC’s and we came up with this quick & fun craft and activity.
We sketched out a simple bowl shape & then cut it out. We did the same with a spoon & then glued the spoon to the bowl.
My daughter gathered up a few different shades of markers & started writing out her alphabet.
She added a few meatballs to go with her letters.
She spread her letters out all over her soup bowl, squeezing them in wherever she could. Me made a couple bowls of soup. She had fun with it & it was a great way for her to sharpen her writing skills.

My daughter and I are always trying to come up with new arts & crafts ideas. My 4 year old has quite the creative mind & brings a lot of amazing ideas to the table. We like to think of new projects, but there are still some favorites that we can do over & over again. My daughter’s favorite activity is making nature islands out of clay & items that we collect from our yard. We gather art supplies from our backyard often.

Yesterday, we collected a pile of small pebbles and then rinsed & dried them off. We were originally going to make our nature islands, but my daughter inspired us towards a different direction.
Last year on Valentine’s Day, I made homemade crayon rubs inspired by a gift that my daughter had received. We had a lot of success with our DIY crayon rubs from last year and wanted to try them again. I don’t know how many of you used to play with, fashion plates(affiliate link) as a child, but they were a favorite of mine. I thought this would be a fun idea for my little girl.

All you need to make these are cardboard, pencil and a low temp glue gun. We have also included printable templates for your convenience. If you choose to use the templates, you will also need scissors and a glue stick.
Cut the cardboard into 3X3 squares. Lightly draw in simple clothing designs or print and cut out our printable templates and use a glue stick to glue them on to the cardboard. Use a glue gun to trace your drawings.
Place a top and bottom clothing section under a piece of paper and use different colored crayons and rub them over the cardboard pieces until images appear.
Mix and match your pieces to create different outfits. Try this method to make shapes, letters, or any other designs. They are so simple to make and a lot of fun to play with.
