While everyone just finished welcoming in the New Year, my family and I are awaiting another New Year’s celebration. January 28th is the Chinese Lunar New Year and for my Vietnamese family it is Tết .

I have been talking to my daughter about the upcoming holiday, so over the weekend, we made some crafts to help ring in the New Year. I can remember being a little girl and loving my mother’s beautiful hand fans. I thought that making some of our own would be a fun project that my 4 year old would enjoy.
What you will need:
Paper Plates
Acrylic Paint in red, gold and black
Jumbo Craft Sticks
Low Temp Glue Gun or School Glue
Black Sharpie
Directions:
We cut a paper plate in half and drew a small half circle in the center of the straight edge of the plate with a Sharpie.
I gave my daughter both halves and she painted them both with the red, gold and black paints.
She made one with a flower on it and another one with a creature that she called a dragon cat. The dragon cat was pretty cute and looked perfect on her fan.
We painted two jumbo craft sticks for each fan and set the paper plates and craft sticks aside to dry.
We used a low temp glue gun to glue our craft sticks to our fans like shown below, but school glue will work too. It just will need to sit until completely dry.
My little girl loved her fans. She fanned herself off and told me that she looked like a Vietnamese princess.
These were simple and fun to make and they can be made all year round.
