Chalk & Nature Art

Land & Chalk Art - Nature and outdoor play for the kids - Summer arts & crafts and activities

This was a great weekend for being outdoors. It was cloudy & it was not too hot or too cold. It was perfect for backyard exploring and playing and, of course, for sidewalk chalk.  My daughter & I love playing with sidewalk chalk. It is an outdoor favorite.

We both began drawing with our chalk & my daughter spotted some loose petals on the ground nearby. She ran to pick them up & brought some over to show me. We decided to work them into our sidewalk art. As we began working, we realized that we wanted more, so we walked around the yard and collected rocks, sticks, leaves & fallen petals.

My daughter loved this. she drew out her picture and placed her nature items around it. She kept jumping up and searching the yard for more. “I need white rocks and 1 stick.” She looked for her perfect pieces & returned.

Our creations were a lot of fun. We worked on them until it was time to start dinner.

Later, I asked my daughter if her favorite part was gathering the rocks. She said “No, I like drawing outside with my mama.” That was my favorite part too.

Popsicle Stick Nature Fairy House

Popsicle Stick Fairy House Nature Craft - Kid's Arts & Crafts

Fairies are all the rage these days & my daughter, like many other little girls, loves them. Another thing that she loves is making nature crafts. We love making them & gathering the supplies together. We walked through the yard & picked some flowers, leaves & rocks.

IMG_0145

We glued some craft sticks together to form our houses. We cut out a few foam pieces for the windows & a door.

IMG_0139

Then it was time to decorate. We drew lines on our windows & knobs on our doors & glued them to each of our houses.

My daughter carefully picked through each of the flowers.

She smelled all of them along the way & asked me to smell them with her.

We used tacky glue to glue all of our nature pieces onto our house & add a little magic.

Nature Crowns

Paper Plate Nature crown craft made with flowers & leaves. Kids arts & crafts..

We love making nature crafts in our house. I am not certain what is more fun, gathering up the materials or actually making the craft.

For this craft we gathered a variety of ferns, leaves & flowers. Be sure to shake off everything to get rid of bugs.

Paint a paper plate in green & let dry. Cut the center out to form a ring. Use a hole punch to punch holes all around the ring.

IMG_9331 IMG_9333

Poke the plants and flowers into the punched holes on the plate. Thicker bunches of ferns & leaves should fit nicely, but some of the flowers & leaves may need to be taped down under the paper plate.

IMG_9337 IMG_9336

If you want to add more plants or flowers, add more holes with the punch. To add a little something extra, we glued a few gemstones around the crown.

Nature Printed Rocks

Leaf printed nature arts & crafts - outdoor fun for kids

It was another beautiful weekend & we had a ton of outdoor fun. While sitting out on the grass, I was struck by this beautiful shadow that was cast on one of the rocks. I quick ran inside & grabbed some paints and was going to capture the shadow on the rock with some paint. We explored shadows & art last month and I thought this would be a beautiful project to do. Alas, the sun disappeared & did not come back and I lost my lovely shadow.

We have been enjoying the beautiful weather these past few weekends & spending most of our time outdoors. We have been experimenting and playing with different nature arts and crafts. Last weekend, we brought some watercolor paper outside and laid some leaves and rocks on top and used spray bottles to spray the paper with a mixture of food coloring and water. This simple nature resist project gave us an idea.

It came out lovely.  I loved the effect & wanted to try it on t-shirts. We tried to recreate the effect to tie dye t-shirts. They came out great, but after we washed the shirts, the food coloring washed out. The food coloring didn’t take, but we were not going to give up on our idea. We found a non-toxic tie dye spray kit on Amazon & hoped that this would do the trick.

The directions on the package did not require that we prep our shirts, but I soaked them in a half vinegar & water mixture to prep them nonetheless. I rang our shirts out & then brought them outside & laid them out flat on cardboard. I slid a piece of cardboard between one of the shirts to keep the color from bleeding through to the other side. My daughter wanted her color to go through,

We gathered rocks, leaves & branches to create our designs. My daughter & I went to work on placing our design elements.

IMG_7335 IMG_7340

Once we had all of our pieces in place, we began to use the spray. Spray over the shirt. Spraying from the side can cause the dye to run under, overspraying could cause this as well. My daughter wore an apron, but we forgot to put on gloves. It is recommended to wear them because it does get messy. Luckily, the spray washes off of skin very easily.

We did one side & let it sit out in the sun to dry. The packaging recommends to let the shirt sit for an hour, but we flipped after just a few minutes.

We made heart designs out of rocks on the opposite side of both t-shirts.

When we finished spraying the other side, we let it dry in the sun for about 1 1/2 hours. The dye sets in the dryer after about 20 minutes. I also ironed it before washing to help heat set it a little bit more. Once the dye was set, we washed them as normal & then air-dried the shirts. The color held up beautifully. My daughter was so proud of her shirt. She couldn’t wait to put it on & show it off.

My daughter and I do arts and crafts project just about every day. Many times, I take inspiration for our projects by things that happen over the course of our day. Sometimes, I just get a random idea and many times my daughter calls the shots.  I had an idea last night to make nature fossils out of play dough, assorted leaves, flowers and small pebbles. We made homemade play dough. We added some cinnamon to change the color and add a lovely smell. We rolled out the dough & cut circle out of the dough to imprint onto.

Play-Doh Nature Craft

PlaydohNatureCradt.jpg

It was not the nicest weekend. Most of my outdoor plans were thwarted by soggy grass & too many bugs. We planned to go to the local kid gymnasium, but when we got there they never opened. Instead, we went to one of our favorite places, the library. We love the library. With all three of us being such avid readers, we would bankrupt ourselves buying new books. The library offers us an unlimited supply of great reads for each of us.

Nature Painting

Nature painting - kid's arts & crafts summer activities

Summertime is a fun time for a toddler. It is a fun time for mommy & daddy as well. My daughter loves the outdoors. Just being outside makes her smile. It is very difficult to get her back in the house once we have taken that first step out the door.

We have been spending so much time on outdoor activities, playing ball, going to the park, riding bikes, etc… It  has been wonderful, but I have found myself missing our arts & crafts time together. For me, teaching Mai creativity is just as important as teaching her ABC’s.

So this week, we combined the two & had a painting picnic in our backyard. I told Mai we were going to paint rocks & leaves, so we went around the yard & gathered some up.

I wiped down the rocks and the leaves and we started painting using the rocks first. The rocks made a lovely canvas. The tiny crystal granules in the rock glistened with each paint stroke causing a few “Oooooooohs & ahhhhs” from my daughter. “So sparkly.” First Mai helped mommy paint her rock in purple before creating her own rock masterpiece.  I would tell her, “Mai paint with green” & she would make swirls with the green, “Now do pink” & she would dab her rock with pink. She thought this was a funny game.

The leaves were fun too. I showed Mai what I was doing which was painting a different color between the veins of the leaf. “Ooooooh, good job mama.” This is still a bit too complicated for her 2 year old hands, but she did a great job adding different lines & swirls on her leaf.

With my daughter’s attention span as it is there was a lot of other activities squeezed in between brush strokes & the completion of our nature works of art, but it was a fun craft with free canvas and one we could enjoy in the sun.

Pasta Butterflies & Angels Crafts

pastacrafts.jpgMy daughter is fascinated by older children. When we are out in public she will very boldly approach an older child and strike up a conversation. The other day she ran up to a boy around the age of 6 & said “Hey boyfriend, hold hands.” This brought a chuckle from her mother & I, but the boy was not that amused. The problem is most kids of an certain age do not quite understand her or want to engage in a conversation with a 2 year old girl.
One of my best friends has a lovely 7 year old daughter. Mai of course adores her & much to my great happiness, she like Mai too. She has a sweet and nurturing nature and is very attentive to my much younger daughter.
They came for a visit this weekend. We were supposed to go to the zoo, but since it was a rainy day, we stayed in & had a craft day instead.
Last week we were crafting & playing with spaghetti. I thought we could continue with the pasta crafts.

Pasta Angels

What you will need:

Bow tie pasta
Spiral pasta
Thick spaghetti
Paint (assorted colors)
Paint brushes
Glue gun

Directions:

Paint one of your bow tie pastas, a spiral pasta & a spaghetti in the colors of your choice. The bowtie will be the wings, the spiral will be the body & the spaghetti will be the antennas. Let them dry.

IMG_1314

Paint as many of each as you would like, painting one of each type of pasta.

IMG_1312

With a glue gun, glue one side of the spiral pasta & place in the center of the bow tie pasta.

IMG_1321

Break off the spaghetti into 2 smaller pieces about an inch or 1 1/2 long. Using the glue gun again, place a bead of glue on the bottom of the broken piece of spaghetti. Find a groove behind the spiral piece & over the bow tie to place your 2 antennas into.
