Nature and Watercolors

Nature and watercolors combine to make a beautiful and fun piece of process art.

With the warmer weather here, we have been playing outdoors a lot more. All of this outdoor play means our nature boxes are filling up with great supplies for art projects and crafts. We gather and collect nature items all of the time and set them aside in boxes. It is fun to find different shaped leaves, rocks and cool looking plants. My five year old loves to glue nature items to paper to make collages. That is where we found inspiration for this nature and watercolors project.Nature and watercolor paints art collage for kids. A pretty and fun piece of process art for the preschoolers and kids. All you need for these simple watercolor and Sharpie shamrocks is watercolors, a paint brush and a Sharpie.

We had ourselves quite a shamrock filled art day yesterday. Being the big bleeding tissue art fan that I am, I made some bleeding tissue paper painted shamrocks  for St. Patrick’s Day. My daughter began the project with me, but then chose a different direction. The end result is these easy and lovely watercolor and Sharpie shamrocks.

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Sea Star. How beautiful and glittery you are.

There is nothing quite as wonderful as watching your children create. It is a fascinating and beautiful thing. My little girl and I spend a lot of time creating together, but my favorite projects are the ones that she comes up with on her own. This lovely sea star was one of her ideas and she was so eager to share it with me.Glitter Sea Star on watercolor paints. The other day, my daughter picked up a CD and was fascinated by the rainbows that formed on it when she moved it around. We held it under the light and moved it all around and admired the bursts of color. The colors were so beautiful. We wanted more and had an idea to try to paint our rainbows.

Mixed Media Penguin Art

My daughter’s favorite movie is Madagascar. She is in love with the little penguins, especially Private. We had movie night this weekend and while in the middle of the movie, she jumped up and said, “Mama, what if we make penguins.”

Chalk Watercolor Paintings - easy & beautiful art for kids - rainbow arts & crafts for children.

It has been a beautiful summer so far. We have spent a lot of time enjoying the wonderful weather and playing outdoors. We swim in the pool on hot days and practice playing Wiffle ball, but my daughter’s favorite outdoor activity is making art with sidewalk chalk. She can’t get enough of it. We have buckets of it & believe me, it does not go to waste.

Since she loves using it so much outdoors, we tried making some art with it indoors as well and we found that it is just as much fun inside as out.

Our project was simple. We used the chalk to draw on watercolor paper.  My daughter chose to make a rainbow & I made a sunset.

When our chalk drawings were finished, we used water & a paintbrush and painted over our chalk drawings following the lines of our drawing.

The water on the chalk had a lovely effect & looked like watercolors.

My daughter actually got pretty excited painting over each color and watching the colors change & blend. She made me watch as she ran her paint brush over every layer of her rainbow.

I had fun watching my painting take form as well. This is a perfect rainy day activity when we can’t hit the sidewalk.

Glittery Cardboard & Watercolor Flowers

I adore my daughter’s creativity. We have been doing arts and crafts together for a very long time & I have watched her creativity soar. This next craft was all a product of my little girl’s crafty little mind. I loved it so much that I had to share.

We use a lot of cardboard for arts & crafts projects and have tons of scrap pieces. She grabbed one of the pieces of cardboard and drew a flower on it. She asked me if I could cut it out for her. I cut it out and she quickly ran & got a glue stick and a piece of paper. She glued her cardboard flower to the paper. She grabbed a bottle of squeeze glue and glitter and spread the glue & glitter over her flower.

She painted her paper in watercolors & explained to me that it was a magical fairy flower.

She added some more glue & glitter.

I loved her finished project. It really did look magical.

Oil Resist Watercolors

I stumbled across an old post that I did a couple of years ago. It was a project that I was particularly fond of, but had forgotten about. I wanted to reintroduce the technique to my daughter now that she was older and it was a great opportunity to update the old grainy photos.

Georgia O’Keeffe Inspired Flower Paintings

Georgia O'Keefe inspired watercolor flower paintings for kids - exploring art history & famous artists.

My little girl loves flowers. Whenever she sees one, she picks it, she studies it, she smells it & then normally she gives it to me. She picked me a few violets this weekend. She lovingly handed her freshly picked flowers to me & asked me to smell them. I smelled them, smiled & then asked her a few questions about the violets. I asked her, what color they were & how many petals they had.

Studying our flowers so closely, reminded me of Georgia O’Keeffe & her lovely flower paintings. I have taught my daughter about a few famous artists. At preschool, her teacher even told me that she came in one day telling her stories of Kandinsky. I was so proud.  This weekend, we had a lesson on Georgia O’Keeffe. I showed her a bunch of her famous paintings. We discussed them a little & my daughter showed me the ones that she liked & even pointed out a few that she didn’t care for. It seemed that she favored the ones with the brightest colors & did not like the ones that were mostly white. I showed her the violet again and asked her if she wanted to paint it like Georgia O’Keeffe. She said she wanted to make her own flowers. She drew her first flower with crayon on watercolor paper & then used our homemade watercolors to paint it in.

While she painted hers, I painted the violet that she brought me.

When she finished her first painting, she wanted to make another. “Mama, you paint too.” she told me, so we both painted another. Her paintings came out great.

Exploring Shadows

Share on FacebookPin on PinterestShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterShare on StumbleUponEmail this to someone

When I heard the weather report for this weekend, I was overjoyed. I could not wait to get outdoors with the family.  I asked my daughter what she wanted to do & she wanted to bring her building blocks outside & play. We brought them out & began to build with them in the driveway.

I also had an idea that I found at the Creative by Nature website. I had seen it a while ago & could not wait to try it with my little girl. Find a shadow in your yard & lay down a piece of paper in its path. We found this lovely shadow.

I showed my daughter how the plant cast its shadow on the paper & invited her to paint with me.

She accepted without hesitation & began to paint the shadow.

What this project sparked was hours of shadow exploration. After my little girl finished her painting, she excitedly jumped up & went on the hunt for more shadows.

She made shadows with her body.

We traced the shadows of our head.

Our hunt for shadows eventually brought us back to our building blocks that we had brought out earlier.
