There is nothing scary about these adorable scarecrow puppets.

By now, you have probably already realized that I am in love with all things fall. Fall trees and their leaves are my absolute favorite, but coming in a very close second are scarecrows.  They are just so cute with their hair made out of hay, their floppy hats and their overalls. These black glue scarecrow puppets are fun to design and paint and will make for a fun fall themed puppet show for the kids when they are done.

While cleaning out our kitchen the other day, I stumbled across a full package of brown paper lunch bags. We do not use them for lunches anymore… but oh! the crafting possibilities. When you have about 50 paper bags and a lazy weekend, what else is there to do but make a bunch of fall crafts.

Crumpled Newspaper Fall Tree

We are kind of excited about this simple crumpled newspaper fall tree craft.

Corrugated cardboard is a favorite material of ours. The texture of the ridges in the cardboard adds a great feel to any project. I love the earthy look that the cardboard brings to the tree trunk. The crumpled newspaper was fun to work with and form and it added another element of texture to this pretty mixed media project.

These Dixie cup squirrels are an easy and adorable fall craft.

My daughter ever so randomly and matter-of-factly said to me the other day, “Mama, let’s make a squirrel craft.” It was so out of the blue. I had to ask why. Her simple answer was “Because they are so cute”. That was good enough for me and let’s be honest, they are pretty cute. These Dixie cup squirrels are perfect for the fall and were easy to make.

Cardboard Pirate’s Sword

Share on FacebookPin on PinterestShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterShare on StumbleUponEmail this to someone

Pretend play is wonderful for building a beautiful imagination. This cardboard pirate’s sword is perfect for the little swashbuckler in your life.

It was pirate week at my daughter’s preschool last week. She came home with an eye patch that they made in her class. For the past week, our home has been filled with “Args and “Aye Mateys”. My stairwell has been turned into a pirate ship and my daughter has turned into an adorable swashbuckler. She made a pink skull and crossbones flag, drew a skull and crossbones on an old cowboy hat and even broke out a pair of snow boots because, well… pirates wear boots. My little girl transformed into a pirate. She explained to me that all she was missing was a parrot and a pirate’s sword. I was up definitely up for the challenge of outfitting my imaginative little pirate. If it is a sword that she needs to battle the high seas, than a sword she will get.

Watercolor and Salt Paintings

Share on FacebookPin on PinterestShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterShare on StumbleUponEmail this to someone

I love the reaction that occurs when you combine salt and watercolors. Salt paintings are a fun process that your kids will love.

Try sprinkling salt on a freshly painted watercolor picture and see what happens. It is lovely. Another cool process is painting on the salt with watercolors. This is a messy process, but a fun one that will certainly delight your kids. A word of warning, this technique is more about the process and the fun than the final product. There are changes that occur to the paintings upon drying. We have included some notes and suggestions about the salt paintings at the bottom of the post.

My obsession with fall trees continues. I’m obsessed! I admit it. I just can’t help myself. They are just so beautiful.   Last winter, we made lovely snow-covered trees and Christmas trees out of pine cones, so we thought why not try this with fall trees as well. We just so happened to have a large bag of assorted pine cones kicking around and have been waiting for a reason to use them. Nature and recyclables combine to make this colorful pine cone fall tree.Pine cone fall tree - use recyclables and pine cones to make these colorful autumn trees. Kid's art and crafts

My daughter and I have been learning a lot about the famous artists together these past few months. She has become fascinated by them. She has been attending art camp this week. On her first day, she came home with a clay Picasso portrait and a lot of new knowledge about the famous artist. She drew a bunch of Picasso inspired portraits that evening. They were wonderful. Her drawings inspired these Picasso portraits.
