Torn Paper Heart Art

We don’t throw anything away in our house. We save cardboard tubes, egg cartons and every little scrap of paper. We work with construction paper a lot and we love to use scrapbook paper for our projects as well. Every left over piece of paper goes into a drawer in my daughter’s craft room. The drawer is full of scraps. You may wonder why we would save a drawer of scrap paper. Here is one reason that we love to hold on to these pieces.

We dug through our drawer and found the colors and patterns of paper that we wanted to work with. We looked for larger pieces of scrap. I love the look of torn paper, so we tore our paper into different sized strips and tossed them into a box.

Valentine’s Day Mixed Media Heart Art

Hearts, hearts, hearts, my daughter love hearts. She doodles them and cuts them out of construction paper all of the time. With her love for hearts, Valentine’s Day is the perfect holiday for my little love bug.

We have been dabbling a lot with mixed media art. My daughter and I love doing these projects together. I had an idea to make a set of love birds using heart shapes.

Fizzing Heart Art Eruptions

These fizzing heart eruptions are a fun way to combine science and art with beautiful and unpredictable results.

Baking soda and vinegar eruptions are a favorite in our house. The ingredients are usually always readily available, they are easy to set up and fascinating to watch. My daughter wanted to make them this week and so we did. With Valentine’s Day nearing, we thought a fizzing heart project would be perfect.

She has recently perfected making hearts. She draws them and cuts them out all the time, so with her love of hearts and Valentine’s approaching quickly, hearts were the perfect choice for our fizzy paintings.

My daughter has inherited a lot of hand-me-down books. We have so many that we don’t even know what we own. For a very long time, my daughter has only read a few of these books. Many just sat there collecting dust, but recently she has been diving into them all. We came across a few art books the other day. We found a few great “how to draw” tutorials and also came across a cute book filled with fingerprint crafts.

My daughter is slightly obsessed with yarn. We have a big bin filled with yarn & ribbon and she pulls it out all the time. She likes to cut it, tie it to things & make obstacle courses throughout the house with it.

Melted Crayon Hearts

My daughter received a new book from her cousins on Christmas. It has since been promoted to her favorite book.

‘The Day The Crayons Quit‘ is a funny book about a group of frustrated crayons that air their grievances to their owner with individual letters to him. In only a short couple of weeks, my daughter has memorized the book from cover to cover. We read it every day, sometime multiple times a day. It made me realize how neglected her own crayons have been. Mai is much more interested in paint & markers these days, but I had a project that I thought might change her mind.

Melted Crayon Hearts

This is a messy project. Lay down paper or a drop cloth for easier clean up.

We started with a piece of cardboard. I cut the cardboard into heart shapes & used a paper hole punch to poke a hole in the hearts to be able to add ribbon or string to later.

We grabbed any unwrapped crayons that we had in our collection to start. We tried a number of different methods to achieve our final projects. We started by holding the crayon on the cardboard & using the blow dryer on a low-speed, high heat setting. Mai needed assistance with this because our dryer to too heavy for her to hold with one hand. I held the hair dryer for her as she worked the crayon around. *Operate caution as hair dryers can get very hot on the skin*

Next we cut small chunks of crayon and laid them a couple of pieces at a time on the heart. I let Mai operate the hair dryer using 2 hands. This created a different effect as the melted crayon ran on its own pattern. I would suggest putting your project into a box or something contained if using small pieces as they do blow around a bit.

My daughter came up with another idea as well. She grabbed a paint brush and pushed around her melted crayon and painted it on. The crayons cooled quickly, so she had to use the dryer often.

When the crayon cooled & dried, we wrapped a ribbon through the holes.

This was a fun project. Mai loved watching the crayons melt. When the crayons got shiny, she knew that they were melting and that she could use them. “Mama, it melts just like an ice cube.” When we finished, she even asked if we could melt more crayons tomorrow.

Paper Swedish Heart Baskets

It has been a rough winter in New England. On Monday, we had yet another storm, a big one. We added another foot of snow to last week’s accumulation.

Sufficed to say, we were snow bound & stuck home. My mother-in-law got caught up in the storm & was snowed in with us. Mai & I were making glittery paper hearts, when my mum-in-law asked me if I knew how to make a Swedish heart. I did not. She gave me a quick tutorial & weaved a lovely heart out of newspaper to practice. They were so cute & easy to make. She showed me how they formed a little pocket & I thought how cute these would be for our daughter to give out filled with little Valentine’s candies.

Paper Swedish Heart Baskets

All you need for this craft is some paper, glue & scissors.

Choose 2 different colored pieces of paper. Fold each piece in half. Cut out a shape like shown below, rounding the tops of the unfolded edge.

Overlap the shapes so that they form a heart shape.

Draw a faint line across the top edge of the overlap on each side of your heart.

Cut 1 slit 1/3 of the width of one of the shapes. Cut from the folded edge up to the line that you just drew. Cut a second slit another 1/3 of the way the same way. Do this to the other shape as well.

This should give you 3 even loops on each.

Start weaving your two hearts together. Stick the 3rd loop from the green through the first loop on the purple shape as shown below.

Pull the same purple loop through the 2nd green loop.

Work that same purple loop all the way over & insert the 1st green loop into the purple to finish off the first weave.

Push the purple shape all the way up to the top of the green shape to make room to start your next loop. Start this row the opposite way this time, pulling the next purple row through the green & then continue to alternate in this pattern until the end.

Add a couple of strips of paper to the inside of each side to make handles.

Fill the basket with some treats.

Valentine’s Day Rubs

For Christmas this year, one of my dear friends bought my daughter Fashion Plates. When Mai unwrapped her gift, it was Mommy’s face that lit up not hers. I loved Fashion Plates as a girl. I felt like a young girl again. As I sat on the floor rubbing a crayon against the plates, I thought to myself this is probably something that we can do at home with our own designs.

Valentine’s Day Rubs

What you will need:

A few squares of cardboard

A hot glue gun

Crayons

Paper

Directions:

I cut a few squares out of a cardboard box. Be sure the squares are clean & even. With a glue gun draw a design. (For adult use only) Keep your designs simple & try to apply the glue as evenly and level as possible for the best effect.

For our Valentine’s themed designs, we went with a heart, an arrow & the word love. The glue should dry in a couple of minutes.

Once dry, place the squares under a piece of paper. Using the side of a crayon, rub back & forth & watch the design transfer onto the paper.

Unfortunately for me, not all of my ideas are winners with my daughter. Like the Fashion Plates, this was more entertaining for mommy than her. She made one arrow & then moved on to drawing a picture of a monster family.

It was not a total waste for Mai though. We discovered that the rubs also make a lovely paint stamper.
